Binnacle Compass. Stunning brass binnacle floating compass,
with Royal Australian Navy stamp. Popularly called a Helmet " Compass,
it was originally designed to be a life boat compass.
Because it was so practical that they soon trippled its size and made it
the main ships compass, typically mounted above the ships wheel.
An internal oil light would illuminate the compass at night (this can be
replaced by a battery powered light). This is a beautifully
crafted quality reproduction of an binnacle compass. the
fully gasketed gimbaled compass swivels to give the steadiest reading in
the choppiest of seas. The compass is enclosed in a polished
brass case with a round shatter proof glass window. This
item is 20cm wide and 23cm wide. |
